Verulam Child Welfare hosted a Holiday Lifeskills programme on the 3rd and 4th of April. 30 children in grade 8 and 9 from around the areas of Verulam were invited to the Society to spend a few hours each day getting knowledge and skills that can better equip them with life’s challenges. 26 children arrived to attend the lifeskills holiday programme. There were guest speakers from different organisations who were invited. On the first day we had Nosipho Lushaba from Film and Publication Board who shared immense knowledge about social media; the good and bad side of it. Lunch was served and the children were offered chicken wraps and cooldrinks.
On the second day and last day we had two guest speakers; Zizile Jaca from SANCA and Sbu from MRC (Medical Research Council). Upon arrival the 26 children were offered breakfast (chicken and mayo sandwiches and cooldrinks). The speakers had talks about the dangers of drugs and substance abuse and HIV & Aids related information. The children interacted very well during the sessions. After a long day of talks they sat down and enjoyed delicious chicken burgers. Each child then received a stationery goodie kit that consisted of a math’s set and books that they could use at home or school. They then received certificates for their participation in the programme over the 2 days and pictures were taken before their families picked them up and they left for home.
